The work that I do is to educate people, health and other professionals, various corporate and private clients on the neurophysiological mechanisms that help understand stress, sleep, illness, well-being, recuperation, health-management, etc. The techniques used are specific breathing and gentle yoga based interventions that most anyone can use to assist them at working and in life to get better sleep, less stress, more relaxation and better general health.

The cumulative effects of daily work stressors impact on the various physiological systems in the body. Worries about health, money, competition at work or concerns about others may keep our bodies tense even when we think we’re relaxed. Modern stress is a long-term state of chronic alertness. Warning signs: such as headaches, muscle tension, indigestion, diarrhoea, back ache, skin problems, reduced immune functioning, irritability, worry, restlessness and disturbed sleep, poor concentration, loss of interest, sadness and withdrawal may also appear.

If these warning signs and symptoms continue without relief, there is a risk of high blood pressure, angina, arteriosclerosis, coronary heart disease, asthma, ulcers and/or allergies. Continuous exposure to stress can increase the secretion of glucocorticoids in the brain, the hormones that increase heart rate, decrease the digestive process and increase adrenalin. Constant exposure to these Glucocorticoids can destroy some brain cells, specifically the glucocorticoid sensitive neurones in the Hippocampus of the brain, crucial in memory and learning. As the stressed person ages, there may be more difficulty in processing information with loss of memory function. The ability to deal with stress enables one to retain intellectual clarity with age and maintain better quality of life.

Many people suffer from sleep problems and sleep deprivation due to stress, injury or illness, which is both unhealthy and counter-productive. A good night's sleep is a necessity, not a luxury. Ongoing health depends on the quantity and quality of sleep that people get each night. The body follows a 24-hour sleep/wake cycle that is regulated by an internal body clock. This circadian clock is linked to the cycle of light and dark and in turn regulates cycles in body temperature, hormones, heart rate and various other body functions. When sleep deprived, people think and move more slowly, make more mistakes and have difficulty remembering things, which can lead to lower job productivity and even cause accidents. Lack of sleep is associated with irritability, impatience, anxiety, and depression. These problems can upset job and family relationships, social activities and can cause unnecessary mental and physical suffering.
